Imagine what one of the bluest states in the nation could do if we support political leaders who take on those big issues and win.

Now imagine that we could elect to the Senate a legislator who:

• led two successful efforts to increase the minimum wage;
• led three successful efforts to increase wages for the state’s human service workers;
• initiated the circuit breaker property tax relief program for seniors on fixed income;
• expanded the earned income tax credit for working families;
• abolished the wasteful relic of Middlesex County government.

I am that legislator and I am running for the state Senate seat recently vacated by Bob Havern.

Massachusetts is a great place to live, but we face serious problems. The state is finding it increasingly difficult to meet its financial obligation to cities and towns. Budgets have been slashed and basic services like education, police and fire protection have been compromised. Homeowners have been burdened with higher property taxes and user fees that are unaffordable for many and unacceptable for all.

I have filed legislation this term that gets to the heart of some of our most pressing problems, including the cost and quality of health care, financing public services fairly and addressing the threat of climate change, including:

• A health care cost control bill, designed for consumers, that maintains access and quality and reduces the waste in our system;
• Shifting long-term care away from expensive institutions and towards more humane and cost-effective home care;
• Expanding the "circuit breaker" to reduce the property tax burden on families on fixed incomes;
• Closing corporate tax loopholes to increase revenues for state and local programs without burdening individuals and families; and
• The Energy, Climate and Economic Security Act that will reduce our dependence on expensive foreign fossil fuels in favor of conservation and renewable resources, and may be the most comprehensive climate change legislation in the U.S.
